- Recently, I helped some young folks in their 20s buy their first home. It was so fun to see the smiles on their faces when they got the key. But...they had forgotten to open their utilities accounts prior to closing. Luckily, I knew a neighbor two doors down, so we strung a 1000 foot extension cord across the back yards (with the permission of the sweet, elderly neighbor in between :) )...they had power to plug in a few things until the power company came to turn it on.
