What year did you become a real estate agent?
1991
How many years have you been in Real Estate?
I've been selling homes in and around Ballard over the past 16 years.
What is the average home price in your market?
In Ballard, one of the last affordable places, homes start around $475k.
Are there any new developments or trends in your area?
The trends in our area this year, are that many home buyers are extremely loyal to their community and want to stay within a half mile or so of where they currently live. We're seeing those buyers move from townhomes and starter homes in the $400 to $500k range and upgrading to larger homes on larger lots in the $700 to $1 million range. Lots of moving around, but mostly in the same hood.
Why do you enjoy being a real estate agent?
Why do I enjoy this? Call me crazy, but I absolutely love being involved in what I fondly refer to the "hook up." It is so much fun to listen to what someone is searching for and say, "oh my god, I just saw the house you are describing to me." Totally rewarding, year after year.
What is the most challenging issue you face as a Real Estate Professional?
As a real estate agent, or as anyone in sales who is obsessive about working & being successful, I think it is critical to get away from the office and recharge your batteries. I finally took off two months, after 15 years without a very long vacation, and what a great feeling. Seriously!
Tell us one of your client success stories or an interesting moment in your profession.
The funniest thing in my career, and it happens almost every year now, is when I show up to walk through a property and do a listing presentation and I can recall the last time I listed and sold it and let me tell you, it was cheap back then! It is amazing where our little local market in Ballard has gone! The days of $149k for almost every little home have been replaced with a starting price closer to $500k, so a totally different ballpark, but you would expect that after 15+ years.
What is your best characteristic?
I'm compulsive and enthusiastic. I love what I do and have even more fun doing stuff that is for charity - great rewards, fun times.
Who or what inspires you the most?
Well, I think it's just working with great folks, fun loving agents, be them Lake & Co. agents, ReMax, whatever, the company doesn't really matter - it's the journey and we're all very good at coordinating our efforts here in Seattle. It's usually a win-win for ourselves and our clients.
What is the best advice you ever received?
My cousin John, who has been a preacher and is extremely smart, has a saying "That was yesterday, this is today" and if you think of that in times of hardship, it does tend to make you feel like the worst has passed and good things are coming back around the corner. We are only as good as we are on our worst days.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I love where I am, but Whistler, British Columbia, is an extremely close second place.
