- It varies by neighborhood, and Chicago varies widely!
- Why do you enjoy being a real estate agent?
- I inherently love working with people. I also love real estate, but 75% of being an agent is being able to listen to what your clients are saying, and being able to negotiate their case. It's all about relationships between client and agent, and agents and each other. The remaining 25% is market knowledge and continuing education in the industry. I have taken more con-ed classes than I can count. I figure, the more I learn, the better prepared I am to represent my clients. BUT...The best part of the job is exceeding a client's expectations, and watching how excited they are about their new (or recently sold) home!
- What is the most challenging issue you face as a Real Estate Professional?
- One of the most challenging issues is working with sellers in a declining market and creating realistic expectations.
- Tell us one of your client success stories or an interesting moment in your profession.
- In 2009, one of my clients was looking for a first home. We found a condo, and were ready to write an offer when a foreclosed property came on the market. Within 6 days, the property had over 20 offers on it, including my client's. It turns out that the sellers accepted my client's offer (barely beating out another, nearly better offer) and she has now over $75,000 in instant equity because of the opportunity the foreclosure provided.
- What is your best characteristic?
- Communication and Honesty (I snuck an extra in there). I think they go hand-in-hand. The key is honest communication, even when it's hard. We're talking the biggest purchase of most people's lives, you can't sugar-coat everything. Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy here. Then, communication. You need to work with someone who will answer your emails and return your phone calls. You need to know that your agent is working FOR and WITH you, not holding you back!
- Who or what inspires you the most?
- The people that can take a bad situation and turn it around. People that can pull themselves up from the ashes and do something for the community and themselves. It should make the rest of us feel grateful for what we have.
- What is the best advice you ever received?
- Listen when people are talking. That's it. Listen.
- If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
- Right now, Chicago. But it seems the winters are getting longer and the summers are getting shorter (and I'm getting older). I would love to move to Latin America at some point. Whether it's South or Central America, I'm not sure. Need to hit a few more countries there to be positive. But so far Costa Rica is in the lead.
