Interview
- What year did you become a real estate agent?
- 1993
- How many years have you been in Real Estate?
- 15, working on 16.
- What is the average home price in your market?
- $200k to $225k
- Why do you enjoy being a real estate agent?
- Hero staus. I help people change their standard of living --in a good way!
- What is the most challenging issue you face as a Real Estate Professional?
- Change. Fifteen years ago, the real estate industry still used paper MLS books. The Colorado Purchase Contract was equal to the size of a single legal page and two letter sized pages and was hand written on a self-carbon triplicate printed on faux onion skin. Today, I can write a contract online and e-mail it to my client anywhere in the world and they can sign it with their mouse! It's a dynamic document that will automatically update on the secure server and I can then e-mail it to the other agent ...all inside of 5 minutes! Ten years ago, I had to meet clients in my office, where the computer and the black and white printer were, to preview listings (single still photos of the front of the house), write offers or review any documents, so we could immediately make copies. Today, I travel with a laptop, color printer/scanner/copier, widescreen digital camera and internet access in my car. I can meet my clients anywhere, spend more prime time with them and get more accomplished in less time. Over the course of the last 15 years, I have not only continued to enhance my real estate education with more studies in Real Estate Law (and Real Estate Investment, 1031 Tax Deferred Exchanges, Trust Accounts, Loan Fraud, Listing, Water Law, Construction Standards, Mold, Radon, Heating Systems, Electrical Systems, Methamphetamine Labs, International Real Estate, Mediation, Foreclosure Prevention, Short Sales, Special First-Time Home Buyer and Affordable Housing Loan Programs), I've also had to grow with software and hardware technology. My first phone was a Motorola 'brick' which could have been used for self-defense, and now I have a G1. My first OS was MS DOS and now I use Vista. As much change as there has been, though, I still work with old-fashined ethics and rely on my clients to refer their friends and their children and parents to me for their real estate needs. I guess it's really true, "The more things change, the more they stay the same"
- Tell us one of your client success stories or an interesting moment in your profession.
- Every transaction brings something new, but one of the more interesting moments I had was working with a young husband and wife, buying their first home. They both worked and were going to use both incomes to pay the mortgage. This particular couple was rather newlywed and shared all decisions. After viewing a dozen or so homes, they narrowed their decision down to two homes. One he really liked, but she found flaws. The other she really loved, but he liked the other. They both agreed that either house would work. I sent them home to 'sleep on it' and they had each debated their case so tenaciously, that I instructed them, "Come back tomorrow with only one house ...and no black eyes are allowed! Work it out!" I met with them the next morning and asked if they had decided and they had. When I asked how, they said they had played "Rock, Paper, Scissors!" Isn't young love great?
- What is your best characteristic?
- I tell it like it is.
- Who or what inspires you the most?
- Appreciation. Nothing inspires me more than to get a phone call or an e-mail from a perfect stranger explaining that their brother or co-worker said, "Call Sherry and do whatever she says". I'd rather have that than all the shiny plaques in the world!
- What is the best advice you ever received?
- Two things. One from a favorite Broker: Always let your client make the decision. Another from a favorite Real Estate Law Instructor: Picture yourself explaining that (action/inaction) to a jury.
- If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
- I haved lived in or visited most of the continental United States, Mexico, Israel, Turkey, Germany, Netherlands, Canary Islands, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Austria and Belgium. I choose Colorado Springs. Southern Portugal would be hard to pass up, though, since Colorado Springs does not have much beach ;)
