What year did you become a real estate agent?
1970
How many years have you been in Real Estate?
Real Estate Agent - 1970;
Broker - 1973 to present.
What is the average home price in your market?
$567,000
Are there any new developments or trends in your area?
There are many brand-new home developments in the North Valley and the South Valley. The average new home in Scottsdale is $1,200,000; in Phoenix, the average new home is $780,000, due to the difference in land value. The new homes are very expensive when you add window coverings, landscaping, pool, and upgrades. A good rule of thumb is to add 30% more to the base price of the home for the finished product.
Why do you enjoy being a real estate agent?
Residential real estate is my passion! It is all about the people, not about the properties. My best friends were clients first and they are true friends. I love the change and the reactions of the people and the new locations that are continually opening up in our extreme growth area. We live in a wonderful environment that is fun to share with all.
What is the most challenging issue you face as a Real Estate Professional?
The most challenging issue in real estate is, and always will be, the use of time. It is so important to recognize priorities and to accomplish them for the clients as quickly as possible.
Tell us one of your client success stories or an interesting moment in your profession.
One of the most interesting moments in my career was when I was showing a home that backed up to a mountain. In the family room, I spotted a scorpion on the vaulted ceiling and was concerned that it might fall onto my client's head. I went to the broom closet, armed myself with a broom and a vacuum, and instructed the client to use the broom to brush the scorpion off the ceiling lightly just after hooking up and turning on the vacuum cleaner. He did so; the scorpion was vacuumed up into the cleaner's bag. I left a note for the seller to carefully change the bag prior to using the vacuum. The seller was just as amused as the buyer - who did buy the home! He had just arrived from overseas and was not at all concerned about a 'little bug'.
What is your best characteristic?
My best characteristic is my optimistic spirit and my ability to accept rejection. My motto is, 'One hour to celebrate and one hour to grieve'. I enjoy my career to the utmost!
Who or what inspires you the most?
People inspire me the most when they are willing to learn, display some flexibility, and have earned the ability to put themselves in a better place.
What is the best advice you ever received?
The real estate broker for whom I worked in the 1970's once told me that 'sellers are yellers and buyers are liars'. He meant that most sellers want more than reasonable for their homes and most buyers will pay more for the home that they really want, so it was my job to figure out how to put the two together. It works when you study the motives and objectives of the people and forget about the exact property.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
If I could live anywhere in the world it would be right here, in Scottsdale, Arizona. The weather is fabulous, there are hundreds of restaurants, golf courses, lakes, mountains, and very gracious, kind, friendly people who care about their beautiful city.
